Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Required purchase for anyone working on cinema...   November 29, 2002

This book, in its fresh 2000 revised form, is even more indispensable than the previous incarnation and is both required reading and an obligatory purchase for anyone studying film. The book is wonderfully set out for those fresh to the medium and concise definitions are made- though the odd one (such as 'epic') may leave you scratching your head, for the most part it is brilliantly written and a great source of reference (and starting point). There is also a helpful bibliography of other sources to consult and at this price it would be rude not to own a copy- much better than overpriced books like Film Art. I think this, The Cinema Book & The Oxford Guide to Film Studies are the best books to start out with...

This book gives in-depth defintions and explainations of 150 key concepts in film and cinema. From history, to practical know how, to movements; all are covered in an this a-z format. The information is in-depth enough to use in degree level studies and light enough to read flowingly as a beginner. This book is a must for any film/cinema student!
