4 out of 5 stars Ideas versus The System   March 15, 2007

While, by my definition, the directors here can hardly be considered rebellious, in Hollywood terms they certainly are. All fought the Hollywood machine, a machine that retreats from creativity, controversy and originality, always seeking the middle ground and ultimately (all they really care about) profit. I was by no means an admirer of all the films analysed here, but so fascinating are the accounts of their journey from idea to screen that I immediately bought or rented the films in order to view them in a new light. This is an exhaustively researched, well written and entertaining book. It's also full of gossip and juicy anecdotes. I think anyone interested in films and their tortuous path to the cinema will enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond Expectations   November 22, 2005

I thought this would be a good book. But it is far better than i thought. It goes into great detail about the making of such films as Fight Club, Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Magnolia and Boogie Nights,Being John Malcovich, Traffic. And many others as well as going into the beginnings of the above mentioned directors. . . .This book is highly recommended for those that love the movies from the 1990's
