1 out of 5 stars Very UNnatural horsemanship   August 16, 2007

On page 202 there is a photograph of Parelli with a horse sitting down. It states about how you need to get your horse's 'heart and desire' and yet you can clearly see round the horse's back leg the thin hobble rope attached that was used to bring the horse into this totally Unnatural and physically damaging position. It's a shame how many new horse owners are conned into believing in this overhyped man and his 'methods'.

4 out of 5 stars A useful read   October 3, 2003

I read this book alongside Richard Maxwell's 'Unlock your horse's talent' in many ways they are similar, Parelli's book is less colourful but alot more in depth of the subject. I found it a very useful book for training my young horse, Maxwell teachs the basic but Parelli takes it to a whole new level, highly recommended!

1 out of 5 stars circus tricks with a price tag.   August 9, 2003

Parelli is nothing but a useless way to exploit trust. sorry but that's the bottom line. do not get me wrong, I DO NOT go around beating horses to submission but neither do I waste and exploit my horses trust. how would you feel if someone came up to you, made you stand on a box, get off again then repeat the process, for no reason? this is not a relative exercise for horses, the horse is made to do something that is not relative to itself and also completely Unnatural. if in the wild a horse wasted valuable energy by doing things that were not relevant it would be easy pray, by making the horse do things that make it easy pray, you are, in the horses eyes, increasing the likely hood that the horse will be eaten, in other words you are helping the predator!

Another thing I have seen is people standing on horse's backs, sorry but how is that natural?!?!?!!

In conclusion, this is one of the most UNNATURAL training method I have came across. Don't waste your time.

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating material, but book fell apart!   January 24, 2002

Parelli has his own sometimes irritating style of expression, but the principles and practices outlined in the book are exciting, and the pictures are fantastic. In my opinion, one would need more information than this to put his work confidently into practice. However, additional material is available on his websites, and he travels enough that one could see him in action without too much effort.
To our dismay, our softcover copy, after two thorough readings, feel into four segments. I recommend a hard copy if you can get one.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Reading   January 15, 2002

Owning what was termed an "unrideable horse" I plodded away for nearly a year gaining the trust and working with our Caity. Pat Parelli could have saved me much time had I discovered this book earlier. His philosophy is mine. This was what I was looking for. I discovered happily that I was not a "horsey person" - much relief. His teaching is natural and the book emphasises both the rider's and the horse's responsibilities. Tried and tested his methods - they really work.
