What a terrific little bookJanuary 21, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
It seems that all of the major guidebooks lump Alabama together with its neighbours and give it a slim chapter at that, focusing solely on the larger cities.
Thank goodness for a series like Off the Beaten Path which isn't afraid to take tourists off the Interstates and inspire us to visit roadside BBQ shacks, find scenic spots for a picnic or hunt down treasures in small towns devoted to antiques and art galleries.
Without this guide I would never have thought of visiting Auburn and its sister city, Opelika. I would never have heard of Eufaula, the 'Natchez of Alabama' with the state's second-largest historic district. I was delighted to hear you can visit the town where Truman Capote and Harper Lee grew up as kids. Imagine walking the same streets and calling into the courthouse which helped inspire 'To Kill A Mockingbird.' Surely these are all essential Southern experiences, so shame on the Rough Guide, Lonely Planet et al for neglecting them.
I just hope the places live up to their descriptions and that the book is not plagued by as many errors as I've spotted in a companion book from the series, the one for Kansas.
My other quibbles are that I'd prefer to see photos instead of sketches and that the lack of clear headings make it difficult to plan a trip. Unless you read some paragraphs carefully, it's not often clear that the places described are actually in different towns miles apart. Finally, it recommends so many restaurants and B&Bs that we've had to look at our itinerary all over again!
