Fantastic resource for travellers seeking real insightsApril 13, 2003 14 out of 14 found this review helpful
I bought this book before a recent trip to Ecuador and the two definite highlights of my trip (visiting the Amazon rainforest on a trip run by the Cofan tribespeople and the Machipuquna cloudforest reserve) were both tours I found in this book.
It has also introduced me to a whole new (or maybe not so new, but new to me anyway!) type of tourism, whereby you can visit some amazing places while contibuting to local communities in the so-called 'developing' world - definitely the book's geographical focus.
If, like me, you feel uneasy about being a 'rich' Westerner travelling in poor countries such as in S.America or Africa, this book offers a way to help support the communities you visit, while still getting a fantastic and insightful experience.
As the book lists tours in about 50 countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America, etc, I'll be referring to it for future trips too. If you want to see the 'reality' of places you visit, buy this book - it will open your eyes to a new way of travelling.
Absolutely fantasticMay 31, 2002 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I bought this book because my partner and I were looking for a luxury holiday that was a little more environmentally sound and more responsible.
Well, what an eye-opener, I never considered some of the issues the book introduces which EVERY holidaymaker should know about. And the listings of exciting holidays seem fab, I just need to sell my house and visit every one of them!
