4 out of 5 stars a review   January 24, 2007

I bought this book hoping to get a general guide to the different walking areas in Britain. The approach the book takes is to describe a small number of walks in each area as a sort of taster, with a couple of paragraphs of description of the area at the beginning. Details such as further reading (always useful), transport and accommodation are also included for each walk/area. While this serves the purpose reasonably well, I would have preferred a more detailed description of the area, and could easily have done without any route descriptions, of which there is no shortage at all in other books! It would also be useful to have included with the more detailed maps something showing where in Britain/the region it was referring to. This came out sounding a little too negative, it is a useful book which I am enjoying reading - just a little too much detail on a small number of arbitrary routes for me.

2 out of 5 stars 4-6 hours or 15 days - little in between   June 9, 2004

This walking guide is an attempt at a comprehensive walking guidebook for Britain. For a Londoner looking for weekend walks it is pretty useless. Only three 2 day walks are listed. The vast majority are either half a day or more than 6 days. The section on Southern England is not nearly as comprehensive as it should be.

4 out of 5 stars Walking in Britain: a good introduction   June 7, 2004

This A5 handbook is the ideal introduction to the best geographic areas in Britain for walking. It contains more than 60 route descriptions, mostly split into day-long sections of long distance routes. For mountainous areas, summit routes are described. Maps and practical route descriptions will keep you on track, although I would recommend sing the book in combination with an OS map in most cases.

But this book is more than just the routes. It provides great background to the various areas, from sights to B&Bs and pubs.

In my opinion this book is best for people who do walk in different parts of the country; it wouldn't be ideal for someone wanting great detail about any particular area. But as an overview, it's currently the best available.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource!   November 22, 2001

I've found the guide to be one of the most comprehensive books available on UK long distance walking. I'm currently planning a walking holiday in Scotland, and although it provides somewhat limited coverage of that region of the UK, it has given me an excellent base from which to plan the trip. The additional resources that are listed against each of their routes means you are unlikely to need anything else as a reference guide. On top of all that, the writing is of a clear and accurate style that makes general browsing of the book an all round enjoyable experience, unlike other titles currently available.

4 out of 5 stars Useful guide for the foreign visitor   September 13, 2001

This is a very well assembled A5 size guide to the major walks in Britain. There is a wealth of information provided, but it must be said that this book is clearly aimed at the foreign visitor to the UK. It is absolutely loaded with information about all sorts of things. Innocently, I purchased this book hoping for some coverage of walks in south east England, but was disappointed to find only the 2 long distance Downs paths covered. What about the 1066 Way that snakes through the High Weald, an area of outstanding natural beauty and steeped in history? (And, incidentally, where I live). Carping aside, this is a super book and given it's context it does the job well. Perhaps it needs more than one Guide? If the publishers are interested I would happily do the South East England edition:)
