5 out of 5 stars Best book for best walks - highly recommended   June 23, 2007

This is a great book, with some fabulous walks lovingly described. Frank Duerden clearly loves the Lakes and loves walking. He has drawn very clear maps and provided good route decriptions - though an OS map is still useful. The book may look a little drab, but the walks are anything but drab!

I was a little disappointed with this book. We took it to the lake district and although it contained lots of information on the various walks described, it was difficult to follow the maps, even with the ordinance survey maps we had taken along as well. The habit of turning the map around and sticking an arrow on to show north I found particularly irritating. Equally it was annoying that no time indication was given for the various walks - the moderate walks were very different in standard, ranging from a bit of a stroll for a couple of hours to a six or seven hour trip over a number of peaks. Some of the walks were on paths that were very easy to find and walk along, and others were hard to follow even with the use of a compass, and again this was not really made clear in the book. That said, we had a number of good days out following the walks, many of which were extremely good.
