The Only Book You Need June 14, 2000 22 out of 22 found this review helpful
Of all the books and guides we took to Peru, Alan Murphy's Footprint guide was the most useful, most informative and by the end of the trip the only one we referred to. A wonderful part of the world, and a brilliant guide to accompany you
The best guide to this beautiful country and its people. January 6, 2000 25 out of 25 found this review helpful
Over the years, the Peru Handbook has become the indispensable guide to the land of the Incas. It is well-researched, laid out and illustrated with a large number of maps. The army of travellers who rely on it during their travels regularly update the publishers with details of hostels, restaurants as well as the cost of tours, buses, etc which keeps the guide up-to-date. What comes across is not just another travel guide, but a reference book full of practical advice, excellent synopses covering the history, politics, culture, and people of Peru along with a real encouragement to discover this magical country. Information about the well-known sights of Machu Picchu, Lake Titicaca and Arequipa are superb; but there is so much more to see and the Peru Handbook is all you need to get you away from the tourist masses! The Peru Handbook is a must whether you are intending to spend 2 weeks or 2 years in the country! It is also invaluable if you reside permanently in the country. Tourists are often first to discover a gem of a restaurant or hostel. The local population finds out via the Handbook! (I should know, my family has lived in Peru since 1971 and keeps a copy of the Handbook close at hand). I have read and used many other guidebooks on Peru - believe me, this is the best!
Brilliant Travel Guide to Peru July 16, 1999 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
This book gives the would-be traveller all they need to know about Peru: sites, food, history, etc. One of the best guides around!
Lots of facts, shame about the maps!! June 10, 1999 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I bought this book, principaly because it was the latest and most uptodate of the guidebooks for Peru. It is packed full of useful, and mostly uptodate information. (Things do change I know!) It tended to be far more thorough than the Lonely Planet guide for irreverant information, and definitely has a no nonsense style when it comes to important stuff such as places to stay, places to eat and how to get around. The major point against is the quality of the maps, which lack all the street names, and do not show locations of enough recommended places. There were also quite a few basic editing errors in the maps. That said, a good guide with good uptodate info!
