5 out of 5 stars Who needs glossy pictures when you're there?   November 21, 2007
Having just returned from a trip to Peru, Chile, Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil, I can honestly say the Footprint guide is superb. There's just all the important information you need, with detailed transport information and everything you need to know to visit those "special" places. It may be short on glossy photos but who needs them when you're visiting the places anyway? The people I travelled with tossed their Lonely Planet guides in the bin and borrowed my Footprint Guide instead.

5 out of 5 stars The best S.America book.   August 1, 2006

Just as other reviewers have stated this is by far the best guidebook for S.America. A new one comes out every year and so is also the most up-to-date book.

5 out of 5 stars Accurate and thorough. Don't buy anything else!!!   July 20, 2006

Fantastic. I am a complete Footprint convert. The guide was thorough, and amazingly accurate. It gives just the facts, which is just what you need - there's hardly any speel at all, and no weight bearing, page wasting waffle.

If you are *thinking* about going to South America get the Rough Guide to read...But if you are *actually going to go* then Footprint is only one to travel with.

This guide accompanied us on our 4 month sojourn through Brazil, Argentina and Chile. We also had borrowed Rough Guides for Argentina and Chile (Long ago I gave up on disgustingly out-of-date 'new edition' Lonely Planets)!

The most used feature of the Footprint guide was the accomodation sections, giving pro's & con's, the one that was also really great was the transport sections. Many guides are severely lacking in the a to b department but not this one, usually they say things like "you can get the bus to Aconcagua" or whatever, but Footprint tell you the exact location the bus leaves from, where and from whom to get your tickets and it's price, frequency etc. The Rough Guides we carried were good for background reading, telling you about the history of a town or feature but useless for transport etc, the Footprint was really outstanding!

5 out of 5 stars More grown-up than Rough Guides and Loney Planet   April 28, 2006

I am a footprint convert. These guides are fantastic and - although they don't have any glossy pictures, which is a shame - they are so much more helpful than any other budget guide book I've tried, since they don't assume you're an 18 year old gap year student. Interesting on history, thorough on transport and accomodation with in-depth and unusual tips on what to see, you can't beat these books for a more grounded travel guide.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the Best   April 12, 2006

This is the original and simply the best guide book out there for South America. Having been around for more than 80 years, and updated yearly the Footprints guide is the most useful of all the guide books out there without question.

I have just come back from a trip round South America, and would have been lost (literally!) without this book. Not only did it give me all the really important information (trains, buses, boarder crossings, bookshops, banks and medical info), but was head and sholders above other guides - simply if you travel with this book, you will not only be the best travelled but be the envy of your fellow travellers. Not a day went by without soneone wanted to borrow my book to make up for the inadequacies of their own guide books (please note - especially, it seemed, Lonely Planet's South America Guide!)

Just a little additional tip - try a bit of old school Blue Peter magic on your guide, to ensure it lasts the course - cover in sticky back plastic!
