Amazon.co.uk Review
Miss Potter walks that fine line between charming and cloying with pleasing sure-footedness. Apple-cheeked Renee Zellweger (Bridget Jones' Diary) once again slips into a British accent to play writer/illustrator Beatrix Potter, the creator of Peter Rabbit. Potter, born into wealth, fought the disapproval of her high society mother to do something as crass as publish a book... and to fall in love with her publisher, Norman Warne (Ewan McGregor, previously teamed with Zellweger in Down With Love). Unfortunately, their love runs into something worse than upper-class stuffiness. Miss Potter skips through Potter's life a bit too briskly at times, but Zellweger's thankfully restrained performance, McGregor's infinite charm, and some beautiful shots of the English landscape keep the movie grounded and engaging. Also featuring a crackling supporting performance by Emily Watson (Breaking the Waves) as Warne's sister Millie. --Bret Fetzer

4 out of 5 stars Sweet, sad but...   November 29, 2008
I just couldn't help thinking about Bridget Jones! When she says "helloooo", for example, I can't help but crack up as I get flash backs to Bridget.

That was the only 'down side' to it though, it was a lovely film, made me cry a few times and just very cute. I liked it alot.

1 out of 5 stars dull, dull, dull   November 15, 2008
I suppose Im in the minority group who hated this film. Seriosly this is very dull and boring. Nothing seemed to happen in it whatsoever. As for Renee Zellwegger, you would have thought her to have been great in it after seeing her in Bridget Jones wouldnt you? Wrong. She does nothing for this film at all. She couldnt carry it through, her acting was all wierd. But I had to sit through and watch this rubbish with my family, who surprisingly all liked it and praised Renee Zellwegger for her fantastic performance. I was like what the hell are u talking about?? Anyway, I have since given this DVD away to my friend who liked it but then she loves Rene Zellewgger, so that kept her happy!

A charming film based on part of the life of Beatrix Potter, about whom I knew nothing; I had never even read her books. My wife has read them and, as a fine amateur artist, appreciated the scenes of drawing of the illustrations etc. She did say that Beatrix Potter had a lot more to her than is shown here, but what is shown is very fine indeed. Well worth seeing. I was especially pleased to see that she bought thousands of acres of the Lake District and saved them from speculative development. And her love for animals was beautifully shown. Wonderful.

A lovely film and personal little film about the early life of Beatrix Potter. Acted with gusto and charm, a perfect family film, with plenty for young and old to enjoy. And some eye opening facts about the formidable Miss Potter! Buy or rent with confidence.

5 out of 5 stars A Delightful Family Film   October 24, 2008

I must admit, I didnt know very much about the life of Beatrix Potter when I came to watch this film. Although she has remained to this day, the most popular author of childrens books, there isnt as great deal known about her personal life.

This version does reveal something about the one tragedy in her life, when she falls in love with her publisher Norman Warne (Ewan McGregor)much to the disapproval of her parents, especially her snobbish mother (Barbara Flynn). Sadly he dies because of illness whilst she is staying with her parents in the Lake District.

She does recover from her sad loss, buys up land in the Lake District and eventually settles there and marries, and continues to write her books.

A fine film in its own right and I cannot praise it too highly, for it is a viewing delight from start to finish. Renee Zellweger is superb as Beatrix Potter, somehow managing to convey the very English dialect despite being an American. Moreover, the images of the lakes are visually striking, the director, Chris Noonan, showing a remarkable eye for detail.

Enhanced by a very good supporting cast with Emily Watson playing Norman's sister, Millie, and Bill Patterson playing Miss Potter's father. The film is also enhanced by a good film score composed by Nigel Westlake.

Viewers would have to have a hard heart if they would not be enchanted by this film, a superb presentation indeed and must be seen.
