5 out of 5 stars A great base for any poetry lesson   January 26, 2007

This book does exactly what it says, providing all the poetry you will need for literacy and more. I use it for most of my poetry ideas as it lists all the genres and provides good variety.
Only bought this a few weeks ago but already well loved and written on to remind me which poems to use for certain word and sentence level work as well as particular genres. I will be buying the other books in this series as i am keen to find out what else there is to offer in this poetry collection that is so well tuned to the needs of teaching.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Resource   July 18, 2004

This book is simply brilliant! It provides examples for all the types of poems necessary to teach the literacy hour. It can be used to supplement examples that you already have or alternatively it can provide all the poems you need in order to explain to children about the different forms of poetry. I first used it teaching haikus to a year four class and found it really helpful when looking for additional examples to supplement the explanation I gave the children.

5 out of 5 stars The Works- a collection of poetry for the Literacy Hour   July 6, 2002

As a practising Primary School teacher, this collection will be of great use to me. It has a copy of every possible type of poem that you would need in order to teach poetry effectively as part of the Literacy Hour. As the Literacy co-ordinator I am also tempted to buy a copy of this book for every class in the school.

5 out of 5 stars Vital resource for anbody in the teaching profession.   April 26, 2001

This book is invaluable for teaching literacy in Primary Schools. As a 3rd Year trainee teacher this book has proved very useful. When presented with teaching a whole range of poetry in Year 6, the book provided the only basic reference source I needed. It has an easy format to follow by simply grouping the poems in poetry type for example, humourous and shape poems. I did use other poetry books to supplement the book such as, 'The Puffin book of Utterly Brilliant Poetry' edited by Brian Patten, which people would also find useful. By the amount of fellow trainee teachers who have this book I would recommend it to anybody.

5 out of 5 stars Perhaps the best anthology of poetry for children I know.   September 19, 2000
74 out of 76 found this review helpful

This marvelous anthology collects all manner of poems for children, from nursery rhymes and nonsense verse to haiku, shaped poems, chants, clerihews, and much more (about 380 poems in all). Many of the poems are clever and funny, which is good for children, but some of them are quiet, thoughtful, and even beautiful. So far, I don't think I've come across any that are needlessly sentimental. Plenty of the poems show a good sense of what it is like to be a child. My sons, ages 7 and 9, are enjoying the book enormously--they've forgotten to ask for poems from their earlier favorite collections. I believe this is the best anthology of poems for children that I know of. Parents, teachers, and kids will all find a great deal here to enjoy.
