Captivating and obession forming January 5, 2009

I waited until I had seen the Twilight film to read the books. On the strength of that film I bought all 4 books at once, and immediately tucked in.
There are not quite the words to describe what an impact this has had on me. I am an intelligent independent 26 yr old woman, and I have been captivated like a naive 13 yr old. It feels wonderful! I read all 4 books (some 2200 pages) in 5 days. I barely spoke to anyone, I stopped to make food (but read while I ate). When I finished a book, despite my very sincere intentions to stop a while before starting the next one - I couldn't do it. Stephenie Meyer must have worked witchcraft in her words, because I am addicted. When I finished Breaking Dawn, I felt so strongly that I didn't want to let go of the saga that I immediately re-read it. Its irrational, but I love it.
In Twilight the basis of a timeless romance is laid. We meet Bella Swan: a clumsy, pale, awkward and yet pretty girl. A girl who never sees herself as others see her. This is a character that every single girl out there can relate to. Bella meets Edward. He's mysterious, gorgeous, unobtainable and everything about him draws her and us, the readers, into him. You want him as much as she does. When she's excited - so are you. This is the essence of why so many people love this book. We all felt like we were falling in love with him. Compared to normal boys, he's Adonis with uncompromised charm. Add that to the fact that he is tortured and utterly respectable and you have an uber-hero.
Naturally this perfect attraction faces its challenges. Conflict arises from obsessive vampire foes, the ultimate vampire "police", werewolves, personal sacrifice, love triangles and good old Biology. How could you get bored?! How could you put it down?
I don't know - I'm still in the moment. I hope you think this is enough to entice you... you'll really be missing out otherwise. The only question left is are you Team Edward, or Team Jacob?

I had never heard of Twilight, I have now finished all 4 of the books, I must say the first is still by far the best & my personal fave. The main reason is there was just more waiting and suspense. The second was little disappointing as I had fallen in love with Bella & Edward by now and was looking forward to more love story but when Edward went away for so long I sat & read the whole book in just under 3hours I had to find out why/what etc but not in an excited way it was more I needed to make sure Edward would return. The third book was the most disappointing, it kept going back to Jacob and the feud, the war, the same bad vampires from the first book, the confusion, it went round and round in circles was bit of a shame felt like could of been more. The forth book is set up weird you have sort of 3 small books inside Bella, Jacob and then Bella again, I did find the Jacob bit a tad boring (sorry fans!) I did find though that when it finally comes round to Bella admitting she has feelings for Jacob I didn't buy it, Edward is her Romeo and I didn't see/feel how she had room for both in her heart in all the other previous books Bella is consumed with Edward he is her drug her everything so I did struggle with that a wee bit, other than that the same baddies back again being a threat and the waiting was a bit too slow, having said that the 4th book has some lovely advantages it was so funny! I cannot say why it would give too much away but I was giggling many a time in a good natural way, it did have some very good points and story unravelled very well and was a good ending. This sounds like why the 5 stars??? Well this saga will have you hooked I almost a mid 20's married woman and I loved every bit of reading them all I had the whole saga done in less than 2weeks and have thoroughly enjoyed it the highs the lows the characters the love is the best I had read since the time travellers wife. I don't like how we have to put things in box like this being your young teenage girls rubbish! Us girls/women love a bit of romance this just has a PG twist to it. I don't see why others have commented on the vampire facts/myths about what a vampire is or is not like I feel that is not the important bit it is the characters, the story, the love who cares about the rest I actually like the fact the author twisted the usual vampire myths and used them to her advantage, she is a very talented woman & I cannot wait to see the film and I will keep my fingers crossed she picks up her pen and maybe starts to write another book to fill the fix I am still left craving!!

I've been reading the Twilight saga; as of this post I'm about half way through the fourth book, Breaking Dawn. Now while I've been finding all of the books to an easy read, I do have some issues with the books. My main issue with the books have been the lack of a struggle on the part of Bella when it comes to her decision to become a vampire; it's as if the author is not familiar with the term foreshadowing. I realize the intended audience for these books is female teenagers, but come on, even they can comprehend foreshadowing! It's almost as if the audience is being treated like they're stupid. I would have liked to have had some suspense on Bella becoming a vampire up until the time she actually becomes a vampire. Is that too much to ask? Apparently. Even after the vampire police insist Bella be turned into a vampire, there should have been some struggle on Bella's part; I wanted Bella to scream that becoming a vampire was ultimately her decision and that she alone would face the consequences of that decision. But Bella didn't. Because it's all about Edward after all, and being with him forever.
There was more of a struggle in Bella's mind between her being with either Edward or Jacob, and ultimately, there wasn't much of decision. In the instance of this particular decision it really boiled down to this: I want to spend eternity with Edward but I love Jacob, too; this was a theme that was repeated several times throughout the series.
Let me focus a little more on Jacob for a moment here. With all the discussion on imprinting in the series, it was pretty easy to figure out that eventually this was going to happen to Jacob; it was just a matter of who. And it keeps Jacob in Bella's life on top of that!!! Too much of an easy out, if you ask me.
My other issue had to do with the whole vampire/human sexual relations. According to the series, and this is assuming that I read this correctly and all, vampires use up their own blood within the first year of their changing. In another series that I've read concerning vampires, males can still father children for a year after they have become a vampire, which makes a lot of sense to me. Edward has been a vampire for 90 years approximately. So I'm having issues about the amount of blood Edward has in his system and the whole reality of biology, as in men don't have enough blood in their systems to run their brain and their balls at the same time. So reality is making it extremely hard for me to buy into this particular part of the book. But if you assume that vampires and humans can interbreed, the whole situation about Bella being pregnant makes sense to me.
Now I don't want to make it sound like I dislike this series, because on the whole, I do. I just wish their had been more of a struggle about becoming a vampire and the choice between Edward and Jacob, because it really wasn't there for me

Twilight is awesome no doubt about it. Although there are some people who hate it others absolutely love it! I'm one of the latter!!
