One of the best Fantasy book I readDecember 22, 2008 I don't know what to add from the other reviews people gave. I would say that the main thing that struck me the most with the book is the easiness of reading it. I have read the Three first books in two weeks, I work and I took on my spare time to finish it. Now I am gutted because I haven't received the last book before going on holidays. Have to wait.....
I have read Feist Tolkien Donaldson Hobb Gemmel etc... I would say it is in the top 3 so far. A lot of fantasy are generally hard to start reading (i.e. Donaldson) or even hard to continue reading (i.e. Donaldson), but the Gift like the Riddle and the Crow is so easy to read. She doesn't try to write complicated plot that have no meaning at the end, she does her job perfectly as reading should always be a pleasure first. And to the people who complained that she is copying Lotr, who doesn't? Lotr is like the bible of Fantasy book!
And one more thing, I am very pleased to see that people wrote good reviews of the book, this is how I have discovered the books, here in UK I couldn't find any of Alison Croggon book in Waterstones Borders etc... thank you Amazon for making me discover book like that!

A WinnerDecember 3, 2008 All 4 books of this series are brilliant.. and as previous reviews said, the size of the books are daunting,but the content of them is immense, the story soon encaptures you, and your waiting for the next book to come.. BRilliant.. i love how Every little detail of the history of the land in the book and how everything is so mysterious and supernatural in a sense. fantasdtic read for those fantasy lovers

In response to Alison's Croggans post below I would like to say a few things.
Firstly I have nearly finished the first book in the pellinor series and very good it is too, i would give it five stars but as I've not yet finished it, or the series as a whole i feel that would be unfair. It's a thoroughly engrossing, intelligent and pleasing fantasy novel.
To the comments made about similarities to Tolkien, true they are there, but they are openly made. To think that any fantasy novel (post tolkien) does not have any influence by his work is simply foolish. It is very similar to the fact that all rock music (post beatles) is in some way influenced by their work. It's inescapable.
Alisons comments about Tolkiens influences are true, he unashamedly stole from all manner of sources for his stories, but does that detract from their brilliance? in my opinion, no.
In the case of 'The Gift' I also feel that the quality of the novel is not lessened by the influences it draws on.
I hope the rest of the series continues in providing this reader with as much enjoyment as the first installment has (and still is).

What a fantastic book. Fast-paced, loveable characters, an entire world of intrigue and mystery lead to a literary masterpiece that left me wanting more. Just a truly special book.
