Great for Independent travellers March 22, 2005 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
Great guide. Much more detailed and up to date compared to the Lonely Planet. As usual it's the excellent standard of Bradt, you certainly dont feel you're trailing around the country on the same route as everyone else - lots of great ideas and suggestions. Namibia is one great destination and this book takes you all over with practical advice and clarity.
Excellent with some wonderful detail May 2, 2004 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This is what a travel book should be. All the information you need with a dash of personal input descibing the country. It has that extra bit of knowledge letting you know the history and detail of what you're looking at, rather than a dry list of addresses and maps. There are a few minor errors, as with all guidebooks, and the map for guesthouses in Windhoek is frustratingly hopelessly inaccurate. Lots and lots of detail and info makes this a must pack.
This 2nd edition already needs an update! February 26, 2004 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
Having bought the Botswana guide I logged on to secure a copy of the new second edition of the Namibia guide, hoping for the same level of high quality up-to-date information...Sad to say some of the information is dated ... A couple of examples to illustrate: Sossusvlei is one of Namibia's most popular destinations. The road from Sessriem to the dunes has been sealed since 2000. The book mentions that "there is talk of sealing the road". Concerning Etosha, there is mention of Helios a long disused waterhole close to the Halali camp. This waterhole was closed before 1998! In mention of Andoni, north of the Namutoni camp, the author says that he has hardly ever seen any game in that area. This depends strongly on the time of your visit. At the end of the dry season September-November, VERY large concentrations of game can be seen in this area. Further in the Caprivi section of the book (last page) there is mention of the dispute between Namibia and Botswana over Kasikili/Sedudu Island. This dispute was settled by the International Court in Hague in december 1999. But not all is bleak, the guide, is VERY COMPREHENSIVE, and still makes an EXCELLENT choice for planning, as long as you check that the information is still current. Clearly some of the material is new to the second edition and thus is current...

Having bought the Botswana guide I logged on to secure a copy of the new second edition of the Namibia guide, hoping for the same level of high quality up-to-date information. NOT! Sad to say much of the information is dated. I'm composing a summary that I will send to the publisher. A couple of examples to illustrate: Sossusvlei is one of Namibia's most popular destinations. The road from Sessriem to the dunes has been sealed since 2000. The book mentions that "there is talk of sealing the road". Also it says that you need to leave your car at the car park approx. 4km's short of Sossusvlei and Dead Vlei. This is only correct if you don't have a 4x4. If you do have a 4x4 you can drive right up to the respective car parks, no shuttle is needed. But not all is bleak, the guide, is VERY COMPREHENSIVE, and still makes an EXCELLENT choice for planning, as long as you check that the information is still current. Clearly some of the material is new to the second edition and thus is current. The book contains a list of car rental firms, and lists a few companies. It also mentions CARAN (Car Rental Association of Namibia), but fails to mention their web-site, which would be a useful resource for visitors.
Excellent for self-drive touring November 28, 2001 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
For two years running, we've used this book on our Land Rover safaris in Namibia. It's been invaluable in helping us plan routes and choose campsites. The level of information is just right for independent self-drive travellers, so this book might not be the best choice for backpackers. Buy this book, get yourself a Landy, and GO!
