The physician's coffee table bookOctober 16, 2000 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Who says US trained physicians can't make clinical diagnoses? This gem of a book lists every clinical sign you could possibly want, in an entertaining (not just educational) fashion. I'd never heard of Dahl's sign before (hyperpigmented patches over the knees in COPD) or Chaddock's sign (like Babinski's only you stroke the dorsum of the foot). While the standard texts like Talley & O'Connor might approach the subject in a mechanical fashion, Orient and Sapira demonstrate an effusive love for their chosen subject, which makes their book so that much more readable and interesting. The book is peppered with memorable anecdotes and humorous illustrations. Ribera's "Christ among the Doctors" is used to demonstrate the effects of a median nerve, and Michaelangelo's "Moses" demonstrates palsy of the medial rectus, while Vesalius demonstrates the incorrect palaption of the epitrochlear nodes! This book is not for the medical student or even the MRCP student (far too detailed) but is good leisure reading. Much kudos to Orient and Sapira for this gem of a book.
